What is Organic? Print E-mail

At its most basic level, organic food comes from land that is farmed without the use of synthetic chemicals (such as fertilisers, pesticides, fungicides), growth regulators, livestock feed additives or anything else that may adversely affect the quality and nutritive value of produce.

Organic farming does not use genetically modified seeds. Organic farms also have a commitment to farming practices that strive for a balance with nature using methods and materials that rely on a low impact to the environment. In this way, Organic farming helps to preserve the land and environment for future generations.

Benefits of Organic Foods

There are three main benefits of purchasing and eating certified organic foods.

  • Environmental: Foods grown by organic means are grown sustainably. Biodiversity, natural soil and plant health is all-important on an organic farm.

  • Health and Nutrition: Healthy soil and healthy plants produce healthy foods. Studies have shown that organic food (especially fresh produce) is more likely to be more nutritious. Effects of harmful synthetic chemical residues in our food and waterways are decreased through organic agriculture.

  • Taste: Anyone who eats organic food is able to confirm that organic food tastes great.

  • Animal considerate: Livestock are treated with care and respect, in an environment where they can express their natural behaviours

  • Social Justice: Organic producers will not use anything (even if made by organic methods) if workers, communities or ecosystems are exploited in the process.
